Convinced of the value of partnerships rooted in shared goals. Collaborative program development and management with 8 nonprofits and government agencies, and own firm, provide a sound foundation for supporting others in their work.

  • Managed Boston Harbor Islands, a partnership park owned by disparate government and nonprofit entities. Built management structure for complex park lying in 7 municipalities, owned by 9 independent entities, administered by 26-member board representing 12 agencies, and advised by 27-member grassroots council. Succeeded by recognizing shared interests.
    • launched cooperative resource management program (including jointly-held easement).
    • connected park lands to urban population through shared visitor services, including award-winning welcome center.
  • Directed non-profit land trust through period of major growth. Prepared and implemented Maine Coast Heritage Trust’s first five-year plan which expanded programmatic and geographic scope statewide and increased media visibility.
  • Entered many start-up positions and built programs by setting priorities, developing short- and long-range plans, building relationships, and meeting deadlines:
    • Housatonic Girl Scout Council (Land Manager)
    • National Park Service (Acadia Chief of Planning & Land Resources, Maine Acadian Culture Project Director, and Boston Harbor Islands Assistant Superintendent)
    • Maine Audubon (Mast Land Sanctuary Director, Land Steward, and Harraseeket Project Director)
    • Maine Coast Heritage Trust (Field Representative)
    • Maine Coast Horizons Marine Awareness Program (Island Manager)
    • The Nature Conservancy (Connecticut Stewardship Director)
  • Prepared and administered operating budgets as staff for 9 organizations (most recently $1.5M annually)—never ran an annual deficit.
  • Conducted successful fundraising to support programs. For example:
    • $10M in National Park Service project funds acquired through proposal-based competition for facility development, resource protection, and programming.
    • $170k for “Boston Harbor Islands Discovery Center” from Coca-Cola Foundation.
    • $117.5k for “Interpreting Harraseeket Estuary” from National Endowment for Humanities.
  • Led other professionals and subordinates.
    • supervised employees, interns, and volunteers for 2 government agencies and 8 non-profits.
    • recruited and successfully lead interdisciplinary planning teams from NPS, Parks Canada, state agencies, non-profit agencies, and private consultants.
  • Managed nationally significant cultural and natural resources as member of national park senior management teams; e.g. Boston Harbor Islands NRA and Acadia NP.
  • Fostered financial and strategic partnerships with nonprofits nationwide by serving on National Park Service Partnership Council.
  • Presented numerous workshops and programs on partnering; e.g. service-wide Park Service training and National Parks Conservation Association conference.
